Rainbows-Daily Reflection 4 (;

Today I used Mrs. Doherty's suggestion and looked at www.ipl.org. I found a lot of information on rainbows. Today I learned that:

  • Donald Ahrens, the author of Meteorology Today describes a rainbow as "one of the most spectacular light shows on Earth."
  • The traditional rainbow is sunlight spread out into its spectrum of colors and diverted to the eye of the observer by water droplets.
  • The "bow" part of the word describes that the rainbow is a group of circular arcs of color all having a common center.
  • When you look at a rainbow the sun is behind you and the center of the circular arc of the rainbow is in the oppisite direction of the sun. The rain is in the direction of the rainbow.
  • It is the concentration of rays near the minimum bending of rays that gives rise to the arc of the rainbow.
  • The rainbow is a whole bunch of colors from red to violet and even colors beyond the eye can see.
  • The colors of the rainbow arise from two facts: sunlight is made up of a whole range of colors that the eye can detect, the range of sunlight colors when combined look white to the eye. Light of different colors are bent by different amounts when it passes from one medium to another.
  • When we see a rainbow and its band of colors, we are looking at light bent from different raindrops.

That is all the information I found today. The sources that I have so far in this project are:

1. World Book Online

2. Rainbows by David Whitfield

3. www.theoi.com

4. http://science.howstuffworks.com

5. www.ipl.org

I didn't have any help today but I feel curious to find new information about rainbows because they are really exciting to learn about! (:
